Weather: Cool to start – we even had to wear our merino tops! Overcast until well after lunch.
Stayed At: Ingleby House Farm
General Comments:
• It was a slow start this morning as it was to be a short day – one of the shortest on our itinerary. There was a lot of sitting around, chats over breakfast, and taking our time on the trail as we couldn’t check into our B&B until 230pm. Our actual walking time was 3hours 5minutes, for those who are interested.
• Our leisurely breakfast included lots of laughs with 4 German guests. This trail seems to be very popular with Germans. I guess when they are only a short flight away and can fly direct into Leeds or Manchester, then why not pop over for a bit of a stroll?
• Nothing really startling happened today. Nothing super different or interesting and yet, it was still a very pleasant walk.
• We said hello to a lot of sheep, horses and lycra-clad cyclists out for a Sunday ride.
• Our biggest challenge today was crossing the busy A19 on foot. Our guidebook says that this is the most dangerous section of whole Coast to Coast Path. That had as us all pretty worried and there were a few sleepless nights in the B&B.
• Now that the Coast to Coast Path is an official National Trail, they have waymarked an 8km diversion which allows you to cross the road via a footbridge. Or you could simply do the 50m sprint.
• Our B&B hostess said the road crossing on foot was doable, you just had to be careful and quick. We were both, saved ourselves an additional 8km walk and lived to tell the tale.😊
Top Tips:
• Services: There are none on this stretch until you get to the service station on A19. They have toilets, a place to sit, hot drinks and food. It’s a handy spot to assess the traffic and work up your courage for the sprint.
• Signs: Make up your own mind about crossing the busy road, but the official Coast to Coast Path signs direct you to the diversion. If this doesn’t appeal, turn right and you are only about 100m from the service station and the A19.
• Dinner: There is only one option at Ingleby Cross – the Blue Bell Inn. Make sure you book a table as they are very busy.

Oh, but something exciting did happen on your hike – you walked through those lovely daisies 🌼🌼 … that’s the kind of sight that immediately puts me in a good mood! And then there was the sprint across a highway – living dangerously!

You’d have thought after making it a National Trail they would have put a walk way over the A19, or at least pedestrian lights! Money I suppose but I’d definitely take 50 meters over 800! And I had the best Lamb chops I have ever tasted in the Blue Bell Inn! You’re through the dullest two days and the North Yorkshire Moors are lovely, The Lion Inn is well worth a refreshment stop 😁

The man at the servo said that they won’t build a bridge because it will disrupt the traffic too much. That sounds like an excuse not to spend money.😁 Maybe when a walker gets flattened (hopefully never) they will find the required cash. And Yep, we had a spectacular change or scenery today. Will share some photos tomorrow. P.S. no lamb chops on the menu at the Blue Bell Inn!😁

I would have been very torn between the feartie in me which hates crossing busy roads and the poor feet which would object to a detour!

Glad your crossed that busy road without problems… Lovely photos ( I wrote a comment and lost it – hopefully it won’t show twice). Take care and enjoy this new adventure. You know how to do it. ahhh yes, Germans are everywhere… we met a few too on the Primitivo. They love hiking.
